In Which I Coo Sympathetically

Well, I daresay this isn't the first time one of my tunes has wound up on a Valentine's Day mix/playlist, but it may well be the first time that such a list has wound up in the Village Voice.

It's #7, the alternate version of "Sackcloth and Ashes" from the Women Who Love Them re-issue comp. And from the description, I learn that I have a "beached-Ramone popcore bleat." Sounds about right to me.

Anyhow, here's to Tom and Bridget. And many happy returns.

I'm pretty sure every love compliation I have ever made has included Our Love Will Last Forever and Ever. Of course, the love has always ceased lasting before forever and ever.

Ain't that the truth...

Congrats, Frank! That is a genuinely great song, one measure of which being that it can shine in a rougher, pared-down demo version and in a filled-out, rockinger album version too (which it does).

You could also take some pride in the fact that "I Feel Love" makes the 2nd-10 list (yes, the Donna Summer version, but I think the MTX cover is also a likable bit of Berkeley pop-punk bash and...umm...moan?)

What?! No Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba?!

I think you wandered into the wrong comments box by mistake, Luther.

I'm going to wander into the wrong comments box on purpose for a second. This is a trivial question, but I am curious.. Why is it that on Amazon.com I can choose to either order your book for $11.53 or order the same thing (hardcover, not audio) for $18.99?

Congratulations, you're a Classic.

For a Valentine's Day song, "She" seems like kind of a bitch.

I can think of several more romantic songs of yours than "Sackcloth and Ashes". I wonder what the reason was for picking that particular song?

My facorite is: "I Believe In You".

I wish we could edit our typos. Even if that meant registering somewhere......

courtney, to further derail the topic, I wondered about that as well. My conclusion, fairly unsupported, was that the pricier book was a "library" edition, possibly with a sturdier spine and/or with the cover design printed straight to the hardcover rather than with a slipcover.

From what I could tell, that's what the ending X in the ISBN designates.

Courtney, I think the higher price is for the "library binding" which is apparently heavier and more public-proof than the plain old hardcover.

Posted by: Dr. Frank at February 17, 2006 02:34 PM

Oops, Dave beat me to it. He's right about the "x" I'm pretty sure.

Posted by: Dr. Frank at February 17, 2006 02:35 PM

"library binding"! ha! "library tape" is twice as expensive as comparable acid-free tape, and "library book ends" are five times as expensive. i tell you, it's a pretty good racket.

mtx songs for romance? hmm... i tend to think of them more in moments of personal failure or frustration.

I have to admit that "Sackcloth and Ashes" is probably my favorite MTX song, next to Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba (that whole Love is Dead LP is just remarkable). It also has the distinction of being the first MTX song I ever really listened to, and my reaction was like, "Wow." I had seen the video for "And I Will Be With You" on MTV2 (yeah yeah I know) and it made me go out and buy Revenge Is Sweet....they didn't have it at my local record store, but the guy at the store said that the one LP they did have (Love is Dead) was even better. I think he was right, even though both albums are great.

D.C., I've always thought of (Ba)^5 as more of a "we're alive, for better or worse!" kind of rave-up than a love song, but that's just me.

You are probably right.
