Now launching Classic Environment

"Love is dead, but it sure left a good looking corpse".

Also from this "classic music review" by Dom Passantino in Stylus Magazine: "the Ramones are the punk Bagpuss." (That will only amuse Anglophiles, and actual Brits or those married to them, but it's pretty funny.)

It's hard to believe that album is getting so close to being ten years old.

(thanks to Kathy Reemes, who left the url as a comment in a previous post.)

Almost ten years old. Well, here's something else to make you feel old: "Day 12,034" is long gone.

Sorry for bringing it up.

That is a hilarious review. BTW, what's it like, being lovable?

Love is Dead is truly a timeless treasure. However, I'm not willing to concede that the Ramones were "absolutely fucking shit." Not the first three albums, anyway.

In the spirit of bad palindromes, I offer this:
Name on Mark Ramone? No, Re-drum on pins.
Spin no murder, one Mark Ramone, man!

It's a lame attempt, but I felt compelled to force a Ramones reference. Yesterday Rules!

Geez, the guy pays you a bunch of compliments, then calls you a prick then a bunch more compliments and then says that this is the only album of your that he needs....

Through meeting you a couple of times and interacting via e-mail and the blog, I definately don't think you're a prick Frank. In fact you're a pretty swell guy.

NOFX for a name, uh I think he has just made a weird amalgam of No Use For A Name and Fat Mike's band....geez again...

Also, the Ramones suck??? I don't think so and and I guess you don't either, Frank seeing as how you covered a whole Ramones album. Yeah, they're simplistic, but that isn't always a bad thing unless you're the Offspring, then it is.

Posted by: Channon at January 23, 2004 07:33 PM

Oh, one more thing Frank. I keep trying to convince Billie Joe Armstrong to invite you guys on tour with them, seeing as how they used to open for you and all. He says it's not up to him, but the record company and promoter. Would you do it if they asked?

Posted by: Channon at January 23, 2004 07:35 PM

Love Is Dead is one helluva a classic album but I'd have to pick And the Women who Love Them as my desert island disc of MTX. Tour with Green Day? Damn, I don't know if I could picture you rocking it out at MSG. What would all the meatheads do? What would all the little kids do? I wonder if the parents would like you...

Bill, As shown on the last album, and the newest album "the Network, Money 2020" and the new upcoming "Green Day" album. I think you'll find that Billie, Mike and Tre....Well, Billie and Mike at least....have done a LOT of growing up in the past 3 years.

I would just like to state that "Sassafras Roots" is both a fucking great song and also my favorite off Dookie. I was deeply hurt. Well, maybe not.

Posted by: Danny at January 23, 2004 10:09 PM

Yeah, Channon is right. "Punk" is in its baroque phase, which I guess means it's morphing into 80s "new wave" again or something.

Posted by: JB at January 23, 2004 10:15 PM

That's the worst review I've ever read.

Posted by: Dom Passantino at January 23, 2004 10:36 PM

i had a dream last night that you filled your blog page with a bunch of pretty-boy photos of yourself.

Dyslexic palindromes make even less sense than the standard kind. Not that the corrected version is any better, but it should be:

Name no Mark Ramone. No, re-drum on pins.
Snip no murder one. No, Mark Ramone, man!

I'm happy that Green Day gave us the amalgam of punk/new wave. It's different and I like it. I welcome back new/wave seeing as how I missed it the first time around. All heil Devo!!! LOL!!

Just to be irritating, the thing that's inapt about the Smiths comparisons is that the Smiths made a point of flouting pop conventions, whereas the MTX makes a point of flaunting pop conventions. To be irritating in SAT form, if the Smiths were Cries & Whispers, then the MTX would be Annie Hall.

Posted by: spacetoast at January 23, 2004 11:47 PM

I actually like the Smiths comparison.

Posted by: chach at January 24, 2004 03:09 AM

Yeah, I like the Smiths comparison, too. But then I would. That said, Spacetoast's flaunt/flout formulation is cute and there's something in it. But as both the flaunters and the flouters aspire to some degree to provide a suitable soundtrack to accompany the crying-in-the-corner episodes of a certain sort of sensitive person... well, speaking as a flaunter, I, at least, understand why some see an affinity.

And Channon, of course given the right circs, it would be hard to turn down a chance to play w/GD again. You'd be out of your mind not to. Though touring with a huge band can be challenging, if my own past experiences are any indication. That kind of tour is run like a military campaign, and you always end up feeling like you're about to be court martialed. For better or worse, MTX tours tend to be more like National Lampoon's Vacation than Patton.

Posted by: Dr. Frank at January 24, 2004 06:14 PM

Well, I agree that the Smiths comparison is miles closer than the Descendents etc. comparisons, and especially in the context of Dom P's hitting nine of ten relevant nails on the head, so I will pretend to acknowledge that my pet distinctions aren't absolutely objective; and resume crying in the corner.

Posted by: spacetoast at January 24, 2004 07:25 PM

There was a lot of anger in that review! I never get that mad while listening to MTX.

"Point of course being was that Dogtanian was better than Bagpuss, so in this equation they become Duran Duran."

I have no idea what any part of this comment [left by a visitor to the linked review] might mean, but I have decided to adore it.

Posted by: byrneout at January 27, 2004 12:33 AM

Would you adore it even more if you knew it was me what wrote the article that left that comment under that pseudonym (I can't get the comments feature to work properly). There is some logic behind it. I forget what.
