Performance Anxiety

We're playing on Friday March 26 at the Boardwalk in Orangevale (near Sacramento) with the Groovie Ghoulies, the Helper Monkeys and the Riff Randalls. All ages. 8pm. Should be a fun night.

There are also a couple of southern California shows in the works for the second weekend in April. Details soon.

Also, I'm going to be doing a few solo shows in the northeast in late April/early May, as part of that west coast singer-songwriter thing I've done for the last few years. I'll post the details as soon as I get them. If I can get my act together in time, I may try to throw together another CDR of demos (along the lines of "eight little songs") to commemorate the occasion. Email requests as usual.

Oops, this isn't Ain't It Cool News, sorry.

Another CDR of demos would be awesome! Maybe you could throw on "She Runs Out When the Money Does"? I'm still itchin' to hear that song.

Good luck with the upcoming shows. Wish I could be there *sigh*

I second "She Runs Out When The Money Does". Also, I wouldn't mind hearing a "stripped down" version of "Just Have Some Faith In Me". Gawd almighty that's a great song.

You once said that you had a bunch of country or country-like songs sitting on the shelf that never made it on albums. Maybe there could be a MTX or Dr. Frank "country" cd. Cross genre muscians are pretty cool in my book. Even if they were a bit on the poppy side, I loved Foggy Mountain Top and Bitter Homes and Gardens, so I could see you being a good country singer/songwriter.

is he serious frank?...I WOULD LOVE!

add it to the part my collection that sadly
only recently includes Johnny Cash,i never
end up buying all the old country style
records i want.

Posted by: just me at March 18, 2004 07:45 PM

Could you throw on "If you see Mary"?

Posted by: Beppe at March 18, 2004 10:29 PM

I was really dissapointed that "If you see mary" wasn't on Yesterday Rules. So I really hope it's on the new demo CD.

Posted by: Mike at March 18, 2004 11:00 PM

I second that emotion! Dr. Frank you are one of my favorite country artists (granted that's based on a whole, what, six songs if you are being generous?). I'd die for a "country" CD.

Posted by: Dave at March 19, 2004 02:24 AM

I liked Ian S' idea of "just have some faith in me" indeed that song is of the finest ilk. Howabout an acoustic or "stripped down" version of REACTIVAT YOUR HEART. Man, that song rocks me like a tropical storm.

Posted by: Walter Soebcheck at March 19, 2004 02:39 AM

This CDR project may soon turn into a boxed set. How about an acoustic version of "Coffee, Tea, or Me"? It's a great song and I thoroughly dug Dr. Frank's rendition at the Lookout! 15th anniversary bash (both the solo version at thee Parkside and the special guest vocalist slot during the Smugglers set at the GAMH). And not that it's any of my business, but I think most of us could afford to pay more than $8. Maybe it could be sold on some sort of sliding scale. $15 for gainfully employed people and $6 for the downtrodden, downsized victims of the George W. Bush job reduction project.

Posted by: j. francis at March 19, 2004 03:04 AM

I'm down with j. francis. Great version of "Coffee" at the Kendall in Cambridge last May, and including it on any forthcoming CDR would rule. An acoustic version of "King Dork" wouldn't hurt, either.

Now, must work on convincing my wife to take a trip with me to SoCal in late April. . .

Posted by: Paul from NH at March 19, 2004 03:20 AM

Gee, Paul from NH, nobody is ever down with me in this space. It feels so good to not be called an ass! I hope your wife is down for the trip. I've dragged my wife to So. Cal. for more than one MTX show. She always goes reluctantly, and then has a great time.

Happy St. Joseph's Day everybody!

Hey Frank, if you haven't started on that booking for the north east yet, I'd love to try to set something up for you at my college, if you don't mind being in the lower New York State area, preferably late April - I wasn't able to make it to see the full band last time you came around, so I'd love to put you on for a show.

Posted by: Joe at March 19, 2004 04:21 AM

Coffee, Tea or Me and If You See Mary. You've been forwarned Frank, especially about Mary because it's so necessary. Ha, ha. I've got a business trip in May. Hopefully I won't be in SF when you're in NYC. That would suck! As for other songs, new stuff is always good. How about all the rejects of Yesterday Rules???

Posted by: Bill at March 19, 2004 04:21 AM

country.

country.

country.

when you utilize steel guitars in the songs, i melt. i would absolutely love to hear a demo filled with country treasures. i mean you already have the perfect tools of the trade:

fondness for cold ones
pearl-snap westen shirts
an acoustic guitar
many "mean girl" stories
and lyrics that will tear a person's heart out of their chest and leave it beating on the table.

put out a country alblum and go down with the greats. george "possum" jones doesn't have anything on you. but if i can put in a request for the demo, how about a cover of "he stopped loving her today" or "Tulsa Time."
I would die to hear Frank throwin out the lyrics....livin on tulsa time, gotta set my watch back to it...yada

how about the cdr for donations... that way some people could buy it for $8.. those more fortunate that would really enjoy it could pay more to benefit mtx.. i really don't care if it cost $30.. i would rather give it to the dr, than to local best buy

Posted by: michael at March 19, 2004 05:25 AM

by the way, i'm the mike from st. louis that was in Lawrence, KS with the stunning Emily.. in case you forgot Frank.. I bet you remember her though!!

Posted by: michael at March 19, 2004 05:30 AM

"she runs out when the money does"
"coffee, tea, or me?"
"everytime you go away you take a little piece of meat with you"
and of course, "if you see mary"

hopefully you'll be hitting up philly like the tour usually does. see you then.

Posted by: tim at March 19, 2004 06:14 AM

I second tim's four requests. If this does go ahead i beg you to put as much on as possible. If it goes above eight dollars we don't mind!

Posted by: Georgina at March 19, 2004 09:49 AM

i assure you i will DEFINITELY come up with ANY amount of money it woiuld take in order to purchase a new set of DF demos. If i'm running low on cash, you'll know who i am from the IVs that would still be attached to me at your show from the blood donations for money.

i sure wish DF was as overexposed as britney spears (minus the belly shirts of course)

I NEEEEEEEED to hear "She runs out when the money does"!

Posted by: Danny at March 19, 2004 05:04 PM

A coutry Cd? BRILLIANT!!!!!! I've always liked the MTX country sounding soungs. A more countrified version of "Thinking of You" would make my CD player most happy. Nah, forget old songs redone, we want to hear new stuff, new country stuff!

Posted by: Kevin at March 19, 2004 05:18 PM

Country? I'm only upset that I didn't think of it first. Original......

Posted by: FAT Mike at March 19, 2004 08:05 PM

I’m expanding my CDR request. “Coffee, Tea or Me” and a whole bunch of Collins Kids covers. Hop, Skip, and Jump? Make Him Behave?

It looks like I was onto something regarding the retail value of the next Dr. Frank homemade release. People will pay twice as much as they did for 8 Little Songs AND there is no middleman to steal the profits. Dr. Frank may never be as overexposed as Britney, but perhaps he will be able to make enough money plying his trade to fill a closet with Chuck Taylors.

in my opinion, new country is what really
killed Johnny Cash...

unless of course its done old style in which
its technically old country anyways

Posted by: justme at March 19, 2004 10:08 PM

You mean you didn't enjoy his rendition of Trent Reznor's Hurt?? ha ha ha

Looks like we're split down the middle between a country CD and some of the MIA MTX songs. I always vote for doing the thing that makes the least sense or is the most original, so it's country all the way for me baby!

Posted by: Zaphod Beelblebrox at March 19, 2004 10:26 PM

I concur-- "She runs out when the money does," because cynicism usually belies truth ;) And I would like to see that song on some sort of release.

Posted by: Erin in Texas at March 19, 2004 10:37 PM

Hey Frank,

This is the guy who had the Dee Snider hair when you met him in '96 and '97 and was a big fat guy with short hair in '99, from Minnesota. I missed your show here this year (I'd now be the skinny Atkin's Diet guy with a balding head guy). Haven't seen you guys since you played the Hole in support of Alcatraz. I'm still waiting for that letter you were sending me 8 years ago, but Fucked Up On Life sorta explains why it hasn't arrived yet.

I'll be looking forward to some new acoustic songs. I have nothing to request that someone else hasn't requested before me.

Posted by: Alex_in_Minnesota at March 21, 2004 07:59 AM

Hey frank, don't you have a cover rendition of leaving on a jet plane lying around? Put that on it too ;)
I like all the requests. I plan to record a cover version of If You See Mary, it's such an awesome song.

you're gonna kill me, but as i watched ben affleck host SNL last week, he totally reminded me of you.

at least it wasn't last night's episode, with jessica simpson and what's-his-name!

Posted by: anne at March 21, 2004 10:23 PM

I'm taking bets on whether Jessica and Nick will get divorsed or or one day she'll either say something incredibly stupid or have a fit over her hairdresser cancelling on her and he'll just take a butcher knife to her OJ style and his only defense will be insanity because she drove him fuckin' nuts.

"ballad of $40" by tom t. hall

Posted by: mike at March 24, 2004 01:37 AM

Saw this today: Poison's Bret Michaels "trying out" country music.

I'd like to hear an MTX cover of "She Thinks I Still Care."

On the other side of the coin, I wouldn't mind hearing a Roger McGuinn cover of "Hell of Dumb." My head version of that song plays it as a sort of updated "lost track" from Sweetheart Of The Rodeo.

clarence white joins MTX! w i c k e d.

Posted by: mike at March 25, 2004 09:24 PM

Maybe i shouldn't say this but i own a copy of Poison's greatest hits and there's a later song on there from '96ish (without CC) called 'stand' which has a folkish feel to it. With Richie Kotzen on guitar for a bit they were heading in a bluesy direction, apparantly.
