Some Things Never Change

I don't really know anyone from my high school anymore, but occasionally I'll get a cordial email from a former classmate who happens on my blog or band. A recent one of these mentioned the latest high school reunion, and provided a link to a page of photos. I've never been one for events like that-- nothing against people who are into them, but it's just not my thing. Never has been, as far as I can remember. However, my curiosity was piqued in spite of myself, so I took a quick look at the photos. Most weren't labeled, and those that were labeled had titles like "he's the man!" rather than names. Names might have helped a bit. But I was struck by the fact that I didn't recognize even one person in any of the photos. It was just a bunch of random people I don't know. Just like back then.

Try graduating with a class of about 40 people. Unfortunately, I knew everyone and I only hope that I can forget all of their faces. As for a reunion...I'm hoping they'll never be able to find me. But, I'm sure that's not the case considering my fiance recently visited and found some people had printed out our bands website and have them hanging in all the gas stations and grocery stores. At least we're famous somewhere.

Got my 10 year coming up. Seeing all those old faces kind of transports me back to high school and all the tough lessons that were learned in that savage place. I exist in paradox during those moments.

Try the inverse in my case. Everybody knows you and wants to talk to you like you're their best friend and you're forced to smile and agree to whatever it is they are rambling about and by the time it's all over, you still have no idea just who the hell they were.

I am proud to say that my high school reunion committee offically considers me "Missing." The one friend I am still in contact with, from that time, has been threatened with punishment of death, should they reveal my location. I wouldn't really remember anyone, besides my close friends, anyway.

i hang out with literally one person from my high school days. we did something totally stupid, like starting a band that is still kicking around to this day.

My graduating class consisted of 54. I had a history teacher who delighted in letting his classes know that, statistically, 80-90% of us were going to amount to nothing. Good stuff.
Anyway, small town, small class, I even played sports (mostly soccer), so I kinda knew most people. I wasn't exactly popular, though. My 10 year reunion would be in 3 years.
One thing that never leaves my memory is John Denery's reaction when I told him I didn't go to my Senior Prom. Frank, do you keep in touch with John? How's he doing? We misses the Hi-Fives, my precious.

There were 215 in my graduating class, including my younger sister, who had skipped a grade. She went to our 20th reunion and came back with a picture in which I recognized all of three people: my sister, the girl I dated for a couple of years, and the skinniest girl I have ever known. (I still recall her complaint about women's libbers: "I go braless all the time, and noone's ever noticed!")
