Sometimes I notice stuff

Does the DMV have people whose job it is to examine requests for personalized license plates and screen out risque or mischievous ones? I'd heard that they do, but if so some must slip by them sometimes because yesterday in Oakland I saw a fancy Mercedes that said "BUKAKE".

The greatest personalized plate i ever saw read: "TIDDIES"
How that slipped by them i'll never know, but it was hilarious.

4 nick8 slipped through the watchful eyes of the screener, too. It was later recalled.

Is it just me, or is the whole notion of the vanity plate lame? It's a pet peeve of mine...right up there with infomercials, light beer, inconsiderate smokers, Ramen, pop up ads, old ladies who bring their dogs into the supermarket, NASCAR guys with little moustaches, and lately, the proliferation of pocket bikes.

Frank, you perv. Only a pervert would know what "BUKAKE" is........wait a minute.....I know what Bukake is......damn!

Yikes, even I know what that is...- but I doubt the majority of DMV workers do.

I don't mind personalized license plates, however, I do despise the "front of the car" airbrushed nameplates like "Joanie hearts Chachi" ha.

Ben,

Try putting the word in question in a google image search...

I would, but, ummm, no thanks.

It's fun to read through pages and pages of rejected license plates and try to figure out why each got rejected:

And just to geek it up a notch (I'm always good for that), bukkakeru is a Japanese verb meaning "to dash (slosh) (water) on a person or in a person's face."

For some reason, we don't seem to have an equivalent English word.

A guy here had T1H5 TA3 for years before they caught on. Someone should write a book on these.

I saw a "BELOW ME" license plate a few years ago. That was hilarious. I think they got the idea from a movie. I recall seeing that somewhere else but can't quite remember where. How that one got past the DMV beats me.

but, i hate personalized liscene plates. unfortunately, rick doesn't, and is now on his second car with a variation of 'vainman' on the liscence plate. *shudder*

That was great, Anne.

Anne, that was the funniest thing I've seen since the Peanuts version of "Hey Ya". Good stuff.
