Romancing the Catechism

More from Oliver Kamm on the Chomsky Cult.

UPDATE: Here's Kamm's follow-up post, which includes some cranky correspondence from the elusive and rather excitable Michael Hardesty.

don't worry frank,i won't be converting to The
Church Of Chomsky. I just think he has SOME undeniable(albeit maybe obvious to most)good
ideals about how the media should work.

chomsky isn't all bad, but he's certainly not worthy of a cult-like following. i know i'm biased (studying under some extremely anti-chomsky linguistics professors), but the only redeeming feature of his social commentary, that i can think of, is that he is somehting of a primer for those unhappy with the media and the establishment. in this way, joining the cult of chomsky is something for adolescents and college students, who will hopefully outgrow it. unfortunately they usually don't and ascribe to his views as if they're the gospel.

Yeah, Kendra, it's true he has led many college students to the gates of skepticism, though he hasn't set a good example of how to behave once you get there. Honestly, I believe I could forgive him all his other sins, and even maybe appreciate him as a lovable anti-establishment crackpot, if it weren't for his atrocious abuse of sources, quotations, citations and references. It's clearly deliberate, as mere sloppiness could not possibly account for its impressive breadth. The purpose appears to be to make the job of checking so laborious that few will attempt it in the end, and I think it's safe to say that in this one area, at least, he has succeeded.
