They had no Choice

David T. over at Harry's Place discusses the new Animals at War memorial, dedicated to "the millions of animals which have been killed in conflict while serving their country."

I'm not really sure how I feel about that. I've been vegetarian for almost 10 years, but I've never been the type that shoves my feelings about eating meat or not eating meat down other peoples throats. Not that I think that's what this is, it's just strange. It's strange because the majority of people don't think of animals the same way as they do about people, so it's really weird to see a memorial like that. I don't think it's wrong or right or anything...Just weird.

well it might be a little unusual but i think it's nice. you know what, it is true, we humans think other animals were put here for our use. i don't think this is really preachy at all. i guess it sort of leaves itself unguarded for all sorts of sarcastic, witty attacks but it's nice to see a bit of unguarded sweetness these days.

what? no mention of the valiant glow worms who helped british soldiers read maps at night during the great war?

the whole thing is weird.

You know who should get some respect/props/big ups? The chimps that were sent into space. Those are some reasonably smart animals. Obviously, they were not consciously dedicating themselves to the noble cause of the advancement of science, but you have to wonder how cognizant they were of what was going on. I wonder if they were able to recognize the earth as the earth once they were in orbit.

Dogs are smart, pigs are smart, birds are smart, rabbits are smart, horses are smart. All of these creatures and more touch and help people's lives.

Why the hell not? Balto got a statue.

While I think this thing is a bit odd, I must admit I was glad when a memorial was palced in memory of Topsy the Elephant.

I think the weirdest thing is the vehemence of the arguments.

Posted by: Elizabeth at November 30, 2004 04:04 AM

that's an SAT word.

After much thought and pondering on whether I should just take this as another bit of amusement,
I think my conclusions are a perhaps bit more utilitarian in nature.

In my short experience, such monuments are made for
those(deserving or not withstanding)who generally
can appreciate them. Thusly,since I don't believe
any animal actually could understand the meaning,it really not much more than a monument to guilt or at least I don't see another purpose.

Posted by: just me at November 30, 2004 08:35 PM

Dead people can't understand the meaning of monumnets either, but they get them all the time.

Posted by: josh at November 30, 2004 09:22 PM

monuments make other people feel good, just like this one. it's all about personal gratification.

Posted by: kendra at November 30, 2004 09:49 PM

personal/instant gratification...reliever of
guilt...its all the same

Posted by: just me at November 30, 2004 09:55 PM

guess no one here had a beloved pet. you all say its about personal gratification, personal relief of guilt. but your attitudes belie the utmost self -involvement.

Posted by: holy modal rounder at December 1, 2004 05:18 AM

at least people who put up monuments are trying to do something positive; instead of sitting behind their computer in ironic bowling shirts and foreign made chuck taylors being cynical and cooler than thou..

Posted by: holy modal rounder at December 1, 2004 05:25 AM

monuments and memorials aren't bad things, but it's ridiculous to say that they're errected/made soley for the benefit of the person/animal/thing being honoured.
all my dead childhood pets are burried in their favourite spots, and that makes me happy, but i'm not so sure they would really care where they were burried or if people remember them.

Is it an ironic sweat suit or just a regular one? And I sure hope it's not "foreign made."

Posted by: josh at December 1, 2004 01:31 PM

hey them's fightin words...i gave my last ironic bowling shirt to my ex-boyfriend(do need a new
one i suppose)and my chuck taylors were bought just before they sold out the company...

...though i am a bit prideful i suppose.

don't really see what that's got to do with it though.enlighten my presumably and comparitively simple mind if you would.

Posted by: just me at December 1, 2004 06:31 PM

well i think memorials are more so that people can go and learn about things or at least be aware of them. if this memorial helps people think about the ways we use animals or even brings that to their attention i don't really see the problem.

Posted by: r a e d y at December 1, 2004 08:16 PM

fair enough...for the sake of information i concede...and i also agree with your statement
that a bit of unguarded sweetness is refreshing.

Posted by: just me at December 1, 2004 08:41 PM

although...presuming your generalization was directed towards
me...i assure you i am not cooler than thou...

indeed i am my own dork...such is my new mantra. : )

Posted by: just me at December 2, 2004 02:20 AM

no i wasn't directing the comment at you. i was just saying that i understand why people would think it's silly or frivolous or humorous, and it doesn't help that it leaves itself so unguarded and has a sort of cheesy phrase inscribed on it. i think it's nice though and it makes me happy to know that other people think and care about animal rights, too.

actually i meant old H-M-R up there,but
thanks for the reassurance. : )
i really am optimist myself, just i have an
inner cynic that keeps trying to tear it down.

Posted by: just me at December 2, 2004 08:14 PM

I wasn't targeting you specifically, JUST ME, i was merely trying to make a point. It's a bit ironic in light of things that you thought it was about you.
But anyway, no harm no foul.

Posted by: holy modal rounder at December 3, 2004 02:42 AM

well, i wasn't really sure, but i can be a strange sort of egoistical paranoid sometimes.

Posted by: just me at December 3, 2004 06:50 PM

they use to say that about Charles Manson, too ;)

Posted by: holy modal rounder at December 7, 2004 06:08 AM

and a bit of an enabler too...what does that make me...a pyschological hypochondriac? ;)
