The Christian Sound Bite

There's an interesting discussion over at Ann Althouse's blog about Steven Colbert, Paul Begala, and John 3:16.

John 3:16 is short, but I don't think it beats "Shema, Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad!" for brevity.

That's one of my favorite DF links ever. The Colbert Report following The Daily Show is the best one-two punch around. I never really thought about it too much, but Colbert's right. While I was watching This Week in God and thinking to myself, "That'll show 'em. How can they possibly maintain their faith when they see this pointed out to them?", he never attacked actual beliefs. He almost always went after the hypocrisies of certain religious leaders, but never the religion itself...except for Scientology. I think even the Mormons got a free ride.

As a Catholic, is it alright to question authority? To say, "The Pope's got it all wrong on this one", without having to question your own faith? I'd like to think yes, but I am not one and don't know how much leeway you're allowed. I assume none. Is the Pope's decision absolute?

It seems that the same church that is opposed to birth control and abortion would have to be equally opposed to boner drugs and in vitro fertilization, because these are people that God obviously does not want to reproduce.

Wanna hear a funny story? In the previous post I had to change V-i-a-g-r-a to boner drugs because it was deemed to be questionable content.

Is this your official stance?
