All the links I've seen concerning Barack Obama's remark in re: Morgan Freeman characterize it as a "slip" or a "gaffe," but it's clearly a joke, and a pretty funny one, too.

I'm reminded of the mockmentory (Sinal Tap-like, forgot the name) in which the guitarist said, "Jimmy Page wrote Stairway to Heaven when he was 27, I could play it when I was 12--I think that says something. Only, Obama was in on his own joke.
