You gotta watch what you say in interviews...

An animal protection group is investigating claims made by British band The Fall[']s Mark E. Smith that he killed two endangered red squirrels and condones the deliberate running over of seagulls, it said Thursday. The revered but unpredictable frontman of Manchester band The Fall said that he would not hesitate setting about a squirrel with a pair of hedge-clippers.

"Squirrels mean nothing to me. I killed a couple last weekend actually. They were eating my garden fence," Smith told Uncut magazine, although it was unclear whether he had confused the animal with their more prevalent American grey cousins.

The singer, whose group has gone through 50 different members and produced 27 albums in their career, also said he "wouldn't have a problem" with people purposefully driving over seagulls in their cars.

I think comments like this come from bad experiences with animals. Not that, ultimately that justifies it. I once composed a mental list of five animals that if i could wish them extinct they would be. My list was pigeons, raccoons, squirrels and mosquitos. I am a peaceful person and was a vegetarian for about 8 years btw ;-)
I had pigeons choose my house as a place of roost and they did so much damage and were so noisy sooooo early in the morning it drove me batty. Spent hundreds trying to humanely pigeon-proof.
Raccoons get into my garbage cans despite my best bungee cords and make a huge mess and scare me cuz the won't leave even when i approach them and/or make loud noises. they have no fear of humans!I won't explain the rest. i didn't pick a fifth cuz i wanted to keep my options open. moo ha ha. really i am not evil. and it was just in my head.but knowing that i would throw off ecosystems etc i would still do it in a heartbeat.
but only mental like that- no hedgeclippers!!!!

i have said more than once in my life that if i could push a button that would eliminate every pigeon on the planet, i wouldn't hesitate for a second.
