Pick

Hey, I just noticed that Andromeda Klein is a "pick" on the Entertainment Weekly website. (For today; Nick Cave is tomorrow.)

Hey, come to this thing...

I'm going to be at the Books, Inc Opera Plaza location in San Francisco on Tuesday, 9/8, reading, singing songs, A-ing Qs, and just kind of standing around talking. 7PM.

The flier to the right -- well, it's to the right if you're at the top of the page, right underneath the "shows" link -- was originally made for a different Books, Inc. event last year, but I'm recycling it because I think it's kind of funny and I don't have a whole lot of other flier ideas at the moment. I believe the squiggly thing above the "Books, Inc." is supposed to be a date, but I can't really read it so I figure it's doing no harm. Plus it looks a bit sigil-y, like something you'd find in the Grimorium Verum or something. So the squiggle stays. But just to be clear, though, in case anyone's confused, the whole thing is happening on September 8th, 2009.

I'll have some updated info and a couple of additions to the show list soon, but the current pre-updated list is after the jump.

Tuesday, September 8, 2009:
NYMBC event at Books Inc., Opera Plaza, 601 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94102. (Well, actually all of these are pretty much reading, songs, signing, standing around awkwardly, so just take that as given.)

-- Borders - Torrance, 3700 Torrance Blvd., Torrance, CA 90503. 2PM.

Book Notes and the flavor of yesterday

I've always loved Largehearted Boy's Book Notes feature, where writers present annotated playlists of songs to go along with their books. So I'm really stoked to be included: here's a playlist for Andromeda Klein.

As mentioned in the post, this was intended to be a mix CD to play before, after, and in between acts at the book launch show at Cato's. In fact, though, it never got played. They looked at my CD and were all: "Okay, grandpa, with your 'compact disk' of 'tracks'..." Airquotes included.

Turned out -- and I know I should have checked this beforehand -- they had no CD player at the bar. They do all their music via Rhapsody or some such.

Now, I did have the playlist on my iPod. But would you leave your iPod on a counter at a crowded bar for four hours? I guess there's something to be said for the storage media of the olden days, after all. Whippersnappers. They have no idea whatsoever of what went on at Stalingrad.

Post-mortem

hier300.jpg
I wrote up a little thing about the Cato's show for teenreads.com.

One thing I meant to include, but forgot, was that my mom was there and people asked her to sign their books. I know this because I saw her inscriptions on them when they were presented to me to sign after the show was over. They included uplifting messages, as far as I remember, though I don't recall any of them specifically. So then I felt I had to comment on the maternal inscriptions. The whole thing had a kind of high school yearbook feel to it.

And here's teenreads.com's review of Andromeda Klein.

Yes, I am a rock star/novelist

I've just about recovered from last night's wild and crazy "happening" at Cato's. And a good thing, too, because I've got an appearance tomorrow at Diesel Bookstore. This'll be a more traditional reading with no one crawling in and out of giant balloons or anything like that, but I will be bringing my guitar and playing some songs. The books sold out pretty quickly last night, so if you're one of the people who didn't get one, I'm sure they can set you up at the store tomorrow.

So that's Thursday, 8/27, at Diesel, 5433 College Avenue, Oakland. 7PM. There's a sweet event preview ("Swords, Spirits, and Sweatshirts") in this week's East Bay Express.

Acknowledgements

I had been worried that no one would show up to the Andromeda Klein book release party last night. That would have been embarrassing. But I suppose the panic did me good, because the last minute frenzy of promotional begging resulted in a packed Cato's and a great night all around. I don't have a head count, but I know there were at least 78 because we handed out cards from a tarot deck as raffle tickets -- Becky Walsh chose the winning card and did a little reading on the winner -- and we ran out of those. I would guess it was over a hundred, anyway. It seemed bigger than the King Dork release thing a few years back, and I always thought of that as a hundred people.

Anyway, I'm writing a fuller account of the proceedings, with photos, for teenreads.com, but for now, I would like to thank:

Beth Lisick, Becky Walsh, STALLION and Team Cherokee, Jennifer Sky Band, Jesse Michaels, Kari, Kayla, Greg, Casey, Kendra, Joe, Yvonne, Christine, June, Dina, Chris, Paige, Aaron, Diesel Books, the Cato's staff, and everyone who showed up in person or on the internet.

It was a good night, right?

My Home Town

Local press was, for some reason, completely uninterested in covering my book release thing. Maybe I just didn't ask them nicely enough.

Anyway, that has me doing things like taping fliers to telephone poles (just like the old days eh?) begging people in the street, listing it on Craig's List, and even doing a myspace event listing.

To which, I received this comment:

thanks for the invite!

peace and love!

My standards are low, perhaps, but that pretty much almost made it worth doing, kind of.

Andromeda Klein! The Song!

akorderimage.jpg

Entertainment Weekly is streaming the A-side of the "Andromeda Klein" 7" if you'd like to hear it.

You can pre-order the 7" (and the book) via this link.

(The first 200 copies are going to be on red vinyl and will be numbered and signed by me and Lane Smith -- that's what the Interpunk link leads to.)

The 7" comes out on September 15. The digital release (of both songs, "Andromeda Klein" and "Bethlehem") is on the book's release date, and I'll put up links for that as soon as I get them.

I hope people will consider showing up to my Andromeda Klein event show thing at Cato's Ale House.

and perhaps one more musical guest TBA.

Notes

-- Mary Kole, yet another MTX fan who grew up to be a writer and lit agent, attended my editor's YA "voice" workshop at the SCWBI conference in LA last week. Here she selects three of my songs as a "teenage perspective cheat sheet ." (Too bad she couldn't find that photo.)

-- Allison wonders if it will be possible to make King Dork work as a movie. Here's hoping.

-- SCWBI conference bloggers discover the inside book jacket of Andromeda Klein.

-- The LA Times's books blog features this interview with an English professor whose course on the rock and roll novel has King Dork on its reading list. I recently got an email from a disgruntled reader who said she was being forced to read King Dork and found many of the sentences unreleaseable and the whole thing not as relabel as other books she had been forced to read. Maybe she was in that class?

-- It is evidently not all that difficult to come off as a bad-ass at a children's literature conference.

Very kind review...

...of Andromeda Klein in Booklist:

Portman’s follow-up to King Dork (2006) will leave some readers turning to less demanding fare, like, say, advanced calculus. Yet it’s a must-read simply because of how rare it is to see any topic tackled with such manic specificity. Andromeda is a high-school junior obsessed with magic. (How many teens do you know who have a favorite occultist?) With the help of a well-worn Tarot deck, copious rituals, and a vast array of tomes with titles like Babylonian Liver Omens, Andromeda scrutinizes her world in search of “synchs” that will help elucidate why she is flat-chested, how to navigate a mean-girl environment, and what to make of the leukemia death of Daisy, her former partner-in-astral-journeys. Though clearly Andromeda hides behind her rituals, Portman’s handling of the subject is nonjudgmental and lots of fun. Laughs are guaranteed, particularly as Andromeda’s poor hearing leads to constant misinterpretations, which she dutifully incorporates into her “lexicon” (example: bagel worm agony stands for naked girl magazine). With impish prose and ridiculously researched detail, Portman fully fleshes a one-of-a-kind character whose idea of the perfect pick-up line is “Want to see my Necronomicon?”

The Little People

Bookdwarf wonders if this is the best book cover ever:

oie_littlepeople.jpg

I'd vote yes.

The "flap copy" is does the job as well:

They speak German. They carry whips. And they are connected in some mysterious way with Nazi experiments carried out in the charming old Irish castle during World War II.

When members of the vacation party are found to be missing from their beds, and when pleading cries ring through the halls of the great house, terror grips hearts and minds, and the vacationers are brought face to face with the unknown...

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009, 7 PM, etc.

When King Dork came out, I had a hard time finding a bookstore willing to do a launch event, so I ended up just doing one myself on the release date at Cato's Ale House on Piedmont in Oakland, where I hang out and do a lot of my writing.

It wound up working out pretty well and being a lot of fun, so even though I don't absolutely have to this time, I figured why not do it again, really?

So here are the details:

Tuesday, August 25, 2009. Cato's Ale House. 3891 Piedmont Ave. Oakland, CA 94661. 7 PM. Free.

Hosted by Beth Lisick, featuring stand-up psychic Becky Walsh, other guests TBA, possibly, and a little bit of reading plus an acoustic set from me.

I'll also be doing these local appearances:

Thursday, August 27, 2009. Diesel, A Bookstore in Oakland, 5433 College Ave., Oakland, CA 94618 7 PM.

Tuesday, September 8, 2009. NYMBC event at Books Inc., Opera Plaza, 601 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94102

After that, I'll be doing this stuff, too, and I'll have more to say about that soon, so stay tuned.

(By the way, if anyone with graphic-y skills feels like helping out by designing a flier, that would be really, er, helpful. So let me know.)

Comments

So as I mentioned, I had to turn off the comments on this blog because of an intense spam attack.

My friend Lynn tried to install one of those "captcha" programs so I could bring back comments but she just couldn't get it to work in the end. (That's one of those things where you attempt to prove you're not a robot by entering some warped text in a field.)

I'm not sure why it won't work, but this blog has been generally funky, if not haunted (if not possessed) for a long time. Sometimes just changing the smallest setting will cause the whole thing to come crashing down. I'm kind of scared to touch it, to be honest. But if anyone has any tips on how I can address this issue, I'd like to hear them. email me -- address is over there to the right.
