Now We See the Violence Inherent in the System

Debating whether or not Frank Loesser's "Baby, It's Cold Outside" is too "rape-y".

This angers me. It's a clever song from one of the great songwriters of the age of clever songs. What's more, this is how the mating ritual actually works. Are there any grown-ups left in the world?

I second that emotion, josh.

There is a pretty good take on it here: http://persephonemagazine.com/2010/12/listening-while-feminist-in-defense-of-baby-it’s-cold-outside/

ps, all men are Potential Rapists, if you had learned anything while attending Cal.

Oh, yes, I remember it well. I was taken aback the first time I heard someone refer to a person in the distance as "that potential rapist over there." And of course, people I knew immediately adopted the term sarcastically and tried to fit it into as many sentences as possible. That phase lasted for around three hilarious weeks.

About the "listening while feminist" thing, it's hard to disagree with any of it of course, but there is something pretty crazy about needing eleven paragraphs of rationalization to excuse enjoyment of a song that most regular people have no trouble enjoying or understanding without anyone assuring them that it's not "not okay."
