Unfazed Cookies

Trying to come up with a "best of" MTX track list. Twenty songs or so. What would you pick?

(I think I've maybe asked this before a time or two and nothing wound up coming from it, but something will definitely be coming of it this time.)

My picks in roughly chronological order: Danny Partridge, Now We Are Twenty One, What Is Punk?, The History of the Concept of the Soul, At Gilman Street, T-Shirt Commercial, Last Time as I Listened to You, Even Hitler Had a Girlfriend, More Than Toast, Swallow Everything, Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba, Dumb Little Band, Love Is Dead, And I Will Be With You, How'd the Date End, Naomi, She's Not a Flower

Posted by: mrmaguda at March 28, 2012 06:26 PM

Agree with Danny Partridge from both commenters above.

I'd add Sgt. Smiles because I swear I had that same dude calling me every day after school, too. It was my favorite song for a long time and nails something about MTX for me, like about being a smart kid who listens to rad music.

Hitler
You're the Only One

There's too many to choose! If pressed, I'd have to say I dig these the most.

She's Coming (Over Tonight)
And I Will Be with You

No real order, just like a general list.

Posted by: Patrick at March 28, 2012 07:54 PM

Agree in theory with all those chosen above. But the absolute essentials, in my book, are: ""With My Looks and Your Brains," "Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba," [The one about the theory of the soul], [The one from "Short Music for Short People"], "I Wrote a Book About Rock and Roll," "I Just Wanna Do It With You," "I'm Like Yeah, She's All No," "Checkers Speech," "Thank You (For Not Being One of Them)", [Hitler], "You Today," and and "Sackcloth and Ashes".

There seems to be a core of six or so songs that everyone picks.

It could be a vinyl EP with three songs on each side. The very best of the very best.

[I guess it can lose Go Go Girl, and God Bless; and I'd say either We'll get by OR I was Losing You, as they are both good to finish on. As a side note it'd be impossible to please the punk fans and the lyrical fans on the same CD unless you have the guts to listen to no one.]

Posted by: Hulka at March 29, 2012 04:38 AM

This was hard. Not necessarily your best work, but trying to boil it down to something like a canon:

Danny Partridge
History of the Concept of the Soul
Gilman Street
Book of Revalation
Love American Style
Martyr
Even Hitler Had a Girlfriend
Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba
I'm Like Yeah, But She's All No

Naomi
She's My Alcatraz
Just Have Some Faith in Me
Take All the Time You Need
Tapin' Up My Heart

Have you ever played 'London' live? It's a tremendously sublime song and would be a great addition to a live set.

Posted by: ben at March 29, 2012 04:46 PM

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've been tabulating the results, if tabulating is the word I want, and some of them have been a bit of a surprise.

ben, thanks for the compliment about "London." It's a pretty difficult song to play, and pretty hard to sing with a loud band, and we haven't (yet) managed to make it work live. I've done it solo a couple of times though.

Hulka: I have most of it, and the rest is being tracked down.

Somebody Who Cares
Oh, Just Have Some Faith in Me
Semi-Ok
King Dork
You You You
I Just Wanna Do it With You
Love is Dead
With My Brains and Your Looks
Love American Style
Prozac Moment
Any song off of "Alcatraz" (the most underrated indie album from a songwriter with a PhD in writing great songs ever)
Swallow Everything would be a good opening track, seeing as how your audience is about to swallow a magnificent catalogue of greatness.

Also: Good time for a tour maybe?

Here's some of my personal favorites that may or may not be more obscure to some. Would also be really cool if you could include the videos on a separate CD or DVD. I absolutely love the "And I Will Be With You" video.
