Jeez, how'd Moira Breen get to be so brilliant? Her latest on that Said PEN lecture Q & A is a masterpiece of sharp analysis and dry humor. I can't improve on the substantive commentary, but I'd just like to point out that his first answer (in response to a question about about how his opinions might have changed over the years) is a serviceable epitaph for his entire career:
Feeling some disbelief that I could have written such gibberish. Disagreeing and wondering how I came to be interested in that particular subject, and then wishing that I could take it back and change it. It's a grim moment.
It is indeed.
