I'd never heard this version before either. The single I have has lots of keyboards on it. It sounds like this may be an alternate mix of the same recording without the keys, but I'm not sure about that.

I really love the keyboard version of this song, and when I couldn't find it on youtube I was disappointed, but of course it's cool guitar-only too. I just had to get used to it.

You'd know a hell of a lot more than I do about what you can accomplish by tinkering with a mix, Frank, but this sounds like a different take to me. I think Vic's voice sounds more deliberately, I dunno, adenoidal in this version -- in the single version he sounds more nonchalant and aloof.

I also like the background "ambition" during the chorus -- it's interesting that they stripped that away but kept the title for the single.

I think my favorite Youtube discovery by Subway Sect is a song called "Why Don't You Shoot Me?" from Don Letts' film on punk (which I still have never seen). This version of "Ambition" is up there, though.
