Another reason not to play the Alain de Botton card when faced with a negative review

The Telegraph will publish a whole article about what a jerk you are, in effect hyping the offending item in your own country as well.

I'm confused. De Botton said that he would apologize, because "it wouldn't cost him anything." But isn't that what an apology is? A retraction which costs you at least whatever had prompted you to speak in the first place? Cheap apologies are the most annoying thing ever.

I was "required" to read De Botton's Essays in Love not too long ago and actually ended up enjoying it. His outburst, however, pretty much kills any chance I'll be reading his new book. At least it's comforting to confirm every so often that even those much smarter than me are capable of moments of utter stupidity!
