Remember the great Rajneeshee salad bar panic?

If you spent any time at all in the Pacific Northwest in the eighties, you probably do. I remember hearing all sorts of outlandish stories about the Rajneeshees, and most of them turned out to be true.

The picture of Rajneeshee "security forces" pausing to pray during paramilitary training is one of many in this fascinating retrospective in the Oregonian. Really quite a story.

UPDATE: Seriously, the photos are just amazing. Here's one showing the security force uniform:

Am I just missing it, or are there fewer of these sorts of self-gulaging cults around these days? I seems like it was all a spinoff of the hippie commune thing. You don't hear that much about it anymore. Jim Jones would have a tough time getting started in 2011. Which is good.

I first learned about the Rajneeshees in "Bowerman and the Men of Oregon."
It kind of put some intrigue in what was otherwise a somewhat ok to plodding bio.
