Not that I'm not pretty narcissistic myself of course....

Freddie deBoer on the sublime narcissism of getting offended on other people's behalf.

I posted this link on facebook without comment (in that pass-agg way I sometimes have of posting things without comment just to see what people will say, knowing if I said this stuff myself everyone would be "all over me" as the saying goes.) Basically, while I can't make heads or tails of his final example concerning celebrities I never heard of and their televised pick-up lines, I found much to agree with. (And judging from the many people who "shared" it, many people in my facebook-o-sphere agreed.)

The reason I'm recapitulating it here is because there was some pushback in the comments from Nate Pensky, with whom I've always had the most interesting and productive discussions in the past. There was some back and forth, and it ended with some intriguing questions about Puritanism and symbols and so forth that I have to give some more thought to before dashing off my thoughts in a comment box. It reminded me of the old days on this blog when the comments used to work. So I'm linking to that post here in case I ever want to find it again to see if it's all still interesting some time in the future.

Peace.
