She's Keeping her Name...

...and so am I.

I quite enjoyed this wedding announcement, as a look into a strange yet distantly familiar world. (Veiled Conceit's vitriol seems a bit over the top to me, though - just my opinion, there.)

The main point here is that there is not one thing about this name that I do not love: Dr. Debbara Dingperson.

Shouldn't it be Dingperoffspring?

Could you please explain to my fiance why I'm not all that thrilled about taking his name. I like my name dammit. Or at least better than his.

I'm taking my fiance's last name. I figure, why not go from one impossible to pronounce last name to another.

well it's all a matter of personal choice. i'm pretty sure i have the most awesome name in the world that i would never trade. even for true love. sigh.

those commenters on veiled conceit were fuckin vicious though. sheesh.

why's it mater if you take the last name or not? it seems like such a non-issue today. then again, my mom didn't take my dad's name, nor did my childhood best friend's mom her dad's name either. of course, if you have kids manda, don't do them the disservice of giving them your last name as a middle name- it's super lame, and gives them a complex.

i'm all about hyphenating names myself... on both sides. how's that for convention.

I had a conservative friend (he thought Reagan was a liberal) who said that, e.g., chairperson should be chairperchild, since "son" was oppressively masculine. (Yes, he was joking.)

In 1978 "Debbie Dingperson" -- what? literally without cracking a smile? -- was a hostess in a nightclub. *So* non-feminist, honey. Then again, Steinem was a Playboy bunny once, so it was OK. (That was purely for research purposes, you understand!)

We're already doing them the diservice of giving them a last name in place of a middle. Eric is insistant upon naming a girl Claire Monet. Don't get me wrong, it's a great song, but I prefer Claire Elenora. I think it's silly to name a kid after a song, and no one will get the reference anyhow.

i think naming your kids after songs or famous people can be dangerous. i think that's why my mom opted not to name me after a kinks song as she had originally planned. i saw if you're naming your kid after something like that don't be shy. i think that's why my first born kid will be called "seymour cray" after cray supercomputers.

Speaking of naming your children after famous people - my friend (baseball nut) named his daughter "Daisy (after no one in particular) Nolan Ryan" (after the hurler) Smith. Daisy Nolan Ryan Smith. Poor kid.
