Editors!

I'm actually not sure I don't prefer the botched version of the joke, in the end, but the correction to this NYT obituary of comedian Sid Raymond, which adds insult to injury by screwing up his final punchline, is kind of priceless:

Because of an editing error, an obituary on Sunday about Sid Raymond, a comic actor, rendered one of his jokes incorrectly. It was about a son who sends a prostitute to his widowed father, still a self-proclaimed ladies’ man in his 90s. The prostitute tells the father that she is his birthday present and promises to give him “super sex” (not that she promises to give him whatever he’d like.) The father replies, “I’ll take the soup.”

Given the lack of comments, I'm inclined -- perhaps entirely unfairly! -- to think that you don't have a lot of readers who care about writers from the mid-20th.

But here is Sid Raymond, and here is the correction.

May these kids be more interested in fifty years or so.

Jeez, no comments at all. Why care about creators? Why give a fuck? A few years later, apparently, no one will care.

Oh, wait, whoops, you delete links. OK, I give up. I linked, but they were deleted.

Hard to make people care when people prevent links from being posted.

Sorry for being so cranky.

That whole deleting people's links thing drives me crazy. Obviously. One spends a bunch of time being careful to make sure one's points are supported, and carefully lines up links as said support, and then finds them deleted.

Absolutely maddening.

And hardly necessary, since only a handful of blogs are so shit-headed. (Basically, you and Brad deLong; two people. And, yeah, I forget every time, since it's so rare. And fucking stupid.)

I keep forgetting the handful of blogs that don't want points supported, and therefore, in my view, don't want comments. Apologies that I forgot I shouldn't bother to comment here.

Damn, because I like you, Frank. I just don't understand why you prevent people from commenting. (I mean, it's not as if I've not run a blog as long as you have, and so know it's totally unnecessary, bogus, utter crap.)

Best wishes, nonetheless, despite the hatred for commenters supporting points.

Sorry, Gary - I don't want to prevent you from commenting or supporting anything. I have the "don't allow html tags" button clicked because some time ago someone posted some malicious code in my comments that allegedly corrupted my whole data base and let to countless problems down the road. There is debate over whether that was actually the culprit, but it was a nightmare, and just to be on the safe side, I decided to be on the safe side. I feel that this whole blog is balanced precariously and could easily tip over, so I'm reluctant to change any settings.

I know it's inconvenient, but you can paste links. You just can't "a href" them.
